I wanted to start this shop because I strongly believe in the power of Opportunity. Opportunity for Artists, both locally and around the world, to self-sustain through their craft, to get the opportunity to grow and perfect their craft and to share their passion with the world.
Clever Element provides opportunity by welcoming in artists from here in Southern California to artisan co-ops from India, Guatemala, Romania, Nepal and more. For all our Artist Partners, we provide a monthly report with all your feedback to help them grow and perfect their craft. We focus on the business side of things so artists can focus on their creativity.
Items we buy have been reduced to just being “things” in our life that clutter and confuse. But at Clever Element, I wanted everything to be meaningful; a meaningful part of your life but also a meaningful in the sense of a shared journey of creation. From an artist’s inspiration to your closet or living room or as a gift for a loved one, you are sharing in that item’s journey by sharing in the artist’s story. That’s why we have Artist biographies throughout our space.
But creating more “things” to add to this world, no matter how beautiful, are not beneficial if they harm the world around us. That’s why we primarily work with artists that focus on sustainable practices, not just ethical ones. The wood items in our space are all made of sustainable, easily grown wood. We encourage our artists to use reclaimed and/or salvaged materials or components that also promote local businesses or sustainability.
We have an opportunity to shop meaningfully. Meaningful for ourselves, our loved ones, the artists that create and the world as a whole.
Some of the remarkable local artists that were a part of Clever Element
“Inspired by the oceans of my travels, my most recent pieces incorporate a technique I devised to channel natural movement in the wax surface. By setting the pieces on fire I can use the movement of wind and motion. Like the waves created on the surface of the ocean, my encaustic pieces are full of changing color, depth, movement and texture.
My initial work was centered on found objects, things I unearthed in junk stores, photographs, memorabilia I rescued from second hand shops, collecting discarded plastics from the world’s beaches. My intent has always been an act of preservation.
I started using beeswax in my collages as an organic alternative to chemical resins and adhesives. I have created my own blend of encaustic mediums mixing unfiltered natural beeswax, damar resin and pigments, which are then applied to wood surfaces, using recycled materials whenever possible. As the depth of the wax on my pieces grew I discovered that I was creating my own style of encaustic painting. The wax is a natural preservative which adds to my desire to preserve.”

Capturing Stillness with my Camera. Exploring the moment through Photography became my adventure in life. It has taken me around corners, around countries and around the world. Ana Phelps grew up in Brazil and moved to USA in the 90’s. Traveling is the main ingredient in her life, along with her family and friends. She lives in Carlsbad, California. Her background is in Psychology, Interior Design and Photography. Her Photographs are part of the “ Getty Image Bank”, “Corbis” and many other agencies. They have been featured in a variety of Magazines, Newspapers, Galleries and Museums. Photography is an amazing medium to evoke feelings and emotions. Adding it to the Natural Beauty of our Planet is her responsibility as a photographer. Each unique moment is a possibility and sometimes when all is aligned, I make my best Photograph.
