Steve Knowles –
My name is Steve Knowles. I am a Carlsbad, California photographer with an intellectual disability. I do not let my diagnoses define me, in fact, I believe that perhaps it has given me the ability to see the world in my own unique and wonderful way.
I am fascinated with details. You may see a bicycle but what intrigues me are the spokes and gears. You may see a Mission bell but what I notice are the fine cracks that have resulted from three hundred years of exposure to the elements. My passion is taking landscape and architectural pictures that have historical value. I am drawn to places like Missions, tea gardens, and ranches. Each has a story to tell. I have fond memories of spending hours in the darkroom in my parent’s basement. It was there that I learned to process and experiment with black and white film. Today I still prefer the 35mm format. I find something sacred about the “old school” way of shooting pictures. Photography is the medium I use to express how I see the world. I hope some of you may share my vision.
